Construction of the Shan Chaung Monastic School (SCG) in Myanmar has been completed.
This was one of the first five schools constructed by the Child's Dream team in Myanmar and the first in the Mon State.
We were sponsoring the construction of a new building for the Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in the school who were previously being taught in a dilapitated building that was deemed no longer safe for the students.
One new buidling with 2 classrooms was erected for the existing 114 students attending the school. It was erected on posts leaving space underneath to be used for classes, whenever the weather permits. A seperate toilet building and a water storage tank were also built, greatly improving both safety and hygiene for the children. In addtion, the classrooms were equipped with the required furniture needed.
The total cost of construction was US$18,524 which was a little over what was initially expected. Being a monastic school, SCG School is able to sustain its running costs from the community’s donations to the temple. Additionally, the community also provides free food and lodging to the three teachers. The government provides the curriculum to the school.
