The Deichou Akpivath Primary school is located in north-west Cambodia, in the Oddar Meanchey Province.
Due to a growing population of Deichou Akpivath village and surrounding areas, there is mounting pressure on the local primary school in meeting growing demands for education of children within the community.
Currently the school consists of 2 buildings, both consisting of dirt floors and old zinc roofs. One of the buildings has no walls and the other terrible ventilation due to limited windows. Both buidlings are dilapidated and badly infested with termites and hence in urgent need of replacement. The dirt floors often turn into mud pits during the long raining season and provide a perfect breeding ground for infections.
There are currently 3 teachers and 212 students enrolled in the school (102 girls and 110 boys) aged between 6 and 15 years of age. Like other schools in the area, the Cambodian Government will be responsible for providing learning materials; providing and supporting teachers; and setting the curriculum for the school.
Together with Child's Dream, the Goverment will continue to monitor and evaluate the school's progress and assess whether any further teaching aid is required.
With the wonderful help of our partner, Child's Dream, we will be building one concrete building with five classrooms and 2 toilets.
New furniture and teaching equipment will be provided and hopefully a playground for the children should funds permit.
Construction has now been completed for this project. Details of the construction process are outlined below.
Child's Dream hired a professional contractor for the construction for the main building and toilet area. The company was paid in instalments, with complete funds only being paid on satisfactory completion of construction. 5% of labour costs were withheld for six months as a gaurantee.
The community members are responsible for the daily maintenance going forward. They built a fence around the perimeter of the school to prevent livestock from entering.
Financially, this was considered a low-risk project.
Deichou Akpivath village is located in the the north-western part of Cambodia.
To visit, you can fly to Siem Reap and then drive to the village. The roads are in relatively good condition, so it only takes around 2.5hours by car to reach Deichou Akpivath.
