The Pcheuk Chrum Primary School is located in an isolated, rural area of Southern Cambodia, in the Svay Rieng Province.
Currently, there are over 130 students, aged between 6 and 12 years of age that attend the Pcheuk Chrum Primary school. The village and community's main source of income is from subsitence farming, plantation works and gathering wild mushrooms from the forest. As such, many of the children within the district are not able to attend school as they are needed by their parents to help in the farms.
The current school building was erected in 2009. Over the years it has become dilapidated and is now in dire need of repair. As you can see in the photos below, many of the wooden planks are broken, leaving the children and teachers within the classroom exposed to both rain and wind. The zinc roof causes the temperature within the classroom to increase substanially during the hot seasons, making it extremely uncomfortable and difficult for the children to learn.
Child's Dream will work with the local community to build a new building, consisting of four classrooms and equipped with new furniture. A toilet block will also be built in close proximity to the school with 3 toilets.
Excitingly, Child's Dream have previously collaborated with the Pcheuk Chrum Primary school in providing them with a solar charging station. They have been very pleased in how well the community have taken care of the station to date.
Investment an partnership with the local community is very important in the longer-term sustainability of the school. Therefore, as with all schools sponsored by AWSF, the village will provide the labour for building of the school. The community will also contribute to the project by filling up the foundation, building the school fence and organising the opening ceremony once construction is completed.
A local contractor will be hired by Child's Dream to manage the labour, transportation of materials and overseesing the construction process.
Payments will be made in instalments based on progress of the construction. 5% of total costs will be held back by Child's Dream for six months post completion date as a guarantee.
You can fly directly to Siem Reap from either Hong Kong or Bangkok. The Pcheuk Chrum Primary School is approximately 2.5 hours north-west of Siem Reap by car. At times access to the school may be difficult due to muddy roads during the rainy season.
We have currently raised 50% of funds needed for this school. We will be sending out a campaign email shortly to raise residual funds needed. All funds are needed by late September 2016.
