School Details

Trapeang Svay Primary School

  • Location

The Trapeang Svay village is located in the north-western province of Oddar Meanchey, close to the Thai boder.

The village was founded in 2003, with the majority of community members moving from various different provinces of Cambodia. Like other nearby areas, the main occupation of members within the Trapeang Svay village is subsistence farming, plantation work and illegal logging.

  • History/Description

Currently the people of Svay Village have no suitable school for their children. They have no health centre nor clean water resources available, meaning they are left to carry water far from home.

The village consists of 241 families. In 2003, they built their first school. However, due to poor building materials, the condition of the existing building has greatly deteriorated. The wooden panels are rotten in many places and the zinc roof makes temperatures within the classroom almost unbearable during the summer months.

  • New building details

Child's Dreams will work with the community members to construct one new building, with four new classrooms. There is no existing toilet block so we will also be building a toilet block next to the school.

Since it is a fully accredited school, the government of Cambodia will support the teachers' salaries, textbooks and other necessary learning materials.

The community has agreed to support the construction by offering unskilled labour. When the project is finished they will take responsibility for taking care of the upkeep of the school.

  • Construction details

As with all schools supported by Child's Dreams and AWSF, payments will be made in instalments according to the progress of construction. 5% of total costs will be held back for six months after completion as a guarantee.

This project is considered low risk as the location is accessible for most of the year.

Construction will begin in August 2016 and the project is targeted to be completed by the end of December 2016.
